Worked currency conversion examples

All rates below are hypothetical teaching examples, not live exchange-rate quotes.

Example 1 — USD to EUR

Suppose you have $250 and a quoted rate of 0.90 EUR per USD. Multiply: 250 × 0.90 = €225. This assumes no fees.

Example 2 — EUR to USD

Suppose you have €180 and a quoted rate of 0.90 EUR per USD. Divide: 180 ÷ 0.90 = $200. This assumes no fees.

Example 3 — Fixed and percentage fees

Suppose you send $1,000, the provider charges $5 fixed plus 1% of the original source amount, and the rate is 0.90 EUR per USD. The percentage fee is $10; net convertible amount = $1,000 − $5 − $10 = $985. The illustrative recipient amount is €886.50. Actual provider fee rules can differ.

Example 4 — Rate comparison

Provider A quotes 0.900 EUR/USD and Provider B quotes 0.895 EUR/USD for a $2,000 conversion. A yields €1,800; B yields €1,790. The difference is €10 before any fees. A better headline rate does not always mean a better final delivered amount.

Example 5 — Rate inversion

If 1 USD = 150 JPY in a hypothetical quote, then 1 JPY = 1/150 USD, approximately $0.006667. Dividing a JPY amount by 150 gives its USD equivalent at that rate.

Additional real-world comparison exercises

Example 6 — A hidden exchange-rate difference

Assume a reference quote of 1 USD = 0.9200 EUR and a provider quote of 1 USD = 0.8950 EUR. On $3,000, the reference conversion is €2,760 while the provider conversion is €2,685, a €75 difference before explicit fees. Both rates are hypothetical. The difference is 2.72% of the reference recipient amount (€75 ÷ €2,760).

Example 7 — Flat fee versus percentage fee

Provider A quotes 0.9000 EUR/USD and a $12 fixed source fee on $1,500: ($1,500 − $12) × 0.9000 = €1,339.20. Provider B quotes 0.8900 EUR/USD and a 0.5% source fee: ($1,500 − $7.50) × 0.8900 = €1,328.325, or about €1,328.33. Under these specific assumptions, Provider A delivers about €10.88 more.

Example 8 — A reverse conversion

If 1 USD = 150 JPY, converting 30,000 JPY back to dollars gives 30,000 ÷ 150 = $200 before fees. Multiplying 30,000 by 150 would be the wrong direction. Always verify the units shown next to the quote.

Example 9 — Why small rate changes matter

On $500, the difference between 0.90 and 0.89 EUR/USD is €5. On $50,000, the same difference is €500. This is why comparing actual executable quotes becomes especially useful for larger payments. Neither example predicts future prices.

Example 10 — Fees charged after conversion

A provider might convert $1,000 at 0.90 EUR/USD, then deduct a €6 recipient fee: €900 − €6 = €894. This differs from our simplified model if you enter 6 as a source-currency fee, which would calculate ($1,000 − $6) × 0.90 = €894.60. For this type of quote, calculate the provider's recipient-side fee separately.
